August 2011

President’s Message

On July 18th, 83 members attended a Special Meeting of the Membership to discuss Club finances.  At the direction of those in attendance the following actions were taken by the Board of Directors:

  • To increase income, Greens Fees were reduced to $25 including cart
  • To encourage outside play, the BOD lifted the three play limit
  • To reduce payroll, Friday and Saturday dining hours were canceled
  • To reduce payroll, Bar & Grill hours were decreased
  • To reduce payroll, Snack Shack operation was suspended

In the April 2011 newsletter I reported “Thanks to the Ladies Golf Association we will have water on the course this season.  The LGA has generously offered to purchase an ice maker to replace the one that broke down last season.  If you haven’t done so already please consider making a donation to the LGA’s yearbook project.  Please contact Alice Stevens to make a donation.”  The BOD’s decision to make water coolers available on the course was tied to the purchase of this ice machine.  Marty Fuller reported to the BOD in June that when rumors of a sale of the Club surfaced the LGA decided not to purchase an ice maker.  Following the July 18th meeting of the membership, during a discussion to reduce payroll, it was suggested we eliminate the ice coolers, which generate no income.  Marty offered that the LGA, in lieu of purchasing an ice maker may be willing to pay the wages associated with filling the coolers.  Marty reported that she checked with the LGA executive board and they agreed to pay up to 10 hours weekly for wages dedicated to filling the coolers.

From the Grounds

We have had a very warm and dry June and July.  There appear to be less dry spots in the fairways during this warm period than there have been in the past.  The spots that have appeared have been the result of irrigation head failures and have rebounded after we have fixed the problem.  Much of the improvement has been the result of the use of the growth regulators.  The growth regulator program reduced watering needs, saved fuel, and reduced the need for chemical applications while improving the grass quality.

We have planted seed in most of the flood damaged locations.  I have been able to get it to germinate in less than ideal conditions.  I am hoping to be able to take down the ropes as soon as the grass can develop a root system that can handle the cart traffic.

The soil that was washed out of the creek banks was contaminated with a lot of weed seeds.  We have not been able to purchase any herbicides this year due to our finances.  The results of this are showing on all the surfaces.  When the temperatures drop into a range where we can apply the last remaining products on my shelf we will spot treat the worst locations.  The crab grass will die when we have our first frost.

From the Pro Shop

Dresser Rand has scheduled an outing for 100 players Saturday, September 3rd with a tentative 1:30pm shotgun start which will allow for a member shotgun in the morning.

Outside play has increased substantially after changing to $25 unlimited.  Every effort is made by the pro shop to protect the value of membership while accommodating the varied needs of public players.

From the Restaurant and Bar

With the recent closing of the restaurant we are doing our best to most effectively utilize the remaining dinner inventory that we still have in stock.  We still have a substantial number of items that I am confident that we will be able to offer as specials in the coming weeks to recoup some of our initial COG.  It has been a struggle to retain staff due to the limited hours that we have to offer but we will continue to do our very best.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their understanding and hard work in serving the membership regardless of circumstances outside of their control.

The Snack Shack is now being run by Scott Evingham.  He has taken on sole responsibility of operating and staffing for the remainder of the season.  Any and all questions related to the operation of the snack shack should be directed to Scott Evingham.
